Gameday

17Oct09

Football and alcohol are a beloved combination, and no college football tailgate would be complete without lots of food, booze, and drinking games. Two of my personal gameday favorites are:

One of Team Fancy Flask’s favorite alcohols is whiskey, with a personal favorite of Jack Daniels. This Whiskey Wednesday, we wanted to share with you about the all of the different types of whiskey.

Every single distillery, even within the same country, produces a different kind of whiskey so there is a great deal of variation. For example, there are 5 different types of scotch, a type of
whiskey produced in Scotland

Scotch
* Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Single Grain Scotch Whisky. Blended Scotch Whisky. Blended Malt Scotch Whisky. Blended Grain Scotch Whisky
* Any whisky with the word single in its label has been made in one distillery only. A blend, on the other hand, is a mixture of whiskies from different distilleries.

Irish
* Irish whiskey is triple distilled, whereas Scotch is distilled twice.
* In general, Irish whiskey is less smoky than Scotch, as a result of the Irish drying their malt without the use of peat smoke

American
* Bourbon is made of grain, and the mixture must be at least 51% corn, with no chemical additives so it is all natural. If it is aged for less than four years, makers are required to put the whiskey’s age on the bottle label.
* Tennessee whiskey: Unlike bourbon, which can be produced anywhere in the US, Tennessee whiskey can only be produced in Tennessee, by law. Filtering apparently refines the whiskey’s flavor, giving it a distinctive sweet taste. Plus, it apparently removes further impurities called congeners from the alcohol – which contribute to hangovers. THIS MEANS LESS HANGOVERS!!

Other countries
* Canadian, Finnish, German, Indian, Japanese, Welsh, and French whiskies

I hope that this has been informative and inspired you to participate in Whiskey Wednesday festivities. Send us your favorite recipes including whiskey…other than the obvious Jack and Coke classic. HAPPY WHISKEY WEDNESDAY!

Today is Tuesday, and I’m ready for some tacos and tequila. Most Mexican restaurants celebrate Tuesday with cheap tacos, but they don’t always have the drink specials to go along with it. What good is a cheap taco if your margarita is $10? Here is a delicious tequila recipe from thebar.com to get you through your Tuesday and on to hump day. We recommend sticking with Jose Cuervo, one of our favorites:

* 1 oz. Tequila (25 oz. per bottle)
* 3 oz. Lime Margarita Mix
* 1 lime wedge
* 1 teaspoon(s) salt

Enjoy your Tequila Tuesday and send us any special margarita recipes you may have!
